Currently, we have witnessed the global economic swings that chaotically affect all spheres: stock markets, trade futures, duties on the foreign economic market, etc. This will certainly have an impact on agricultural exports as well.
Earlier Christophe Hansen (Luxembourg's EU Commissioner) reported, that Brussels wants to find new agreement for trade with Ukraine, because the temporary suspension of tariffs and quotas — dubbed the Autonomous Trade Measures — was granted after Russia’s 2022 invasion and will end on June 5. But they couldn't find operative decision. Thus, there will be no further liberalisation of trade terms, says Agriculture Commissioner. As the Council of the European Union stated, ‘The current measures will in any case be cancelled...’ And if last year the restrictions affected the export of corn, now the situation will affect all products, and trade in raw grains including.
But how will it affect the grain processing industry? Will this be an incentive to re-prioritise the agro-market in favour of grain processing? Probably, yes. It is not without reason that in recent years there has been increasing loud talk about the fact that exporting grain as a raw leads to the greatest share of lost profits. It's not for grain traders, certainly. Nevertheless, the global market for processed grain products has grown by almost US$ 10 billion over the past 12 years. As far as Europe is concerned, the increase in trade in processed grain products is particularly pronounced. In Europe, flour milling products increased by US$4.8 bln. This indicates the rational use of imported grain. Of course, such an important industry as grain processing deserves the attention of the Governments! But while major world politicians are ‘fighting’ by import duties, experienced Ukrainian businessmen in the current situation, by hook or by crook, are already increasing the productivity of grain processing into cereals and flakes.
At the same time, a major Ukrainian company «AGRO-SIMO-MASHBUD», which is supplier of grain processing equipment for turnkey grain processing plants, is shipping technological equipment for modernisation of a buckwheat mill in the Kiev region. This buckwheat plant is going to be reinforced with new equipment, a hydrothermal treatment unit for steaming buckwheat, and focus has been placed on increasing the productivity of the plant as a whole. It is already consigned the following equipment by two large batches: Roll hullers СГР-600 for hulling buckwheat, Dryers ВС-10М, Air separators АСХ, buckwheat Steamers ПЗ-1, Plansifters РК-4, Magnetic separators Б8-БМП. It also was dispatched additional equipment for transport and aspiration systems such as Screw conveyors KS-160, Сyclone cleaning rigs with gate valves and drives, radial dust fans ВРП of different powers.
We hope, the European Commission will let Ukraine’s emergency access to the EU market expire in June, and hope, that many existing trade limits are likely to remain in place. But we recognise that the level of conditions will be less forgiving (not so gentle). So experienced business entrepreneurs realise that it is always better to have the ‘solid ground’ of a profitable business, especially when it relates to such a valuable and demand product as groats.
