Millet (millet groats) is one of the healthiest and yet most underrated grains. This cereal, which may seem unremarkable at first sight, is an excellent functional food that provides complex support for the cardiovascular system thanks to its rich nutritional profile.

Millet porridge is one of the TOP five healthiest cereal dishes. We wrote about its health benefits here. Today we are looking at the equipment required at every stage of the production process for making the highest-quality millet groats.

    1. CLEANING. The first step is to prepare the raw materials. The millet grains have to be cleaned of any impurities, dust, small stones and metal waste using separators. The technological line includes essential grain cleaning machines:
      • Grain-cleaning separator А1-БМС-6М for pre-cleaning, which is possible due to differences in size and aerodynamic properties between the product grains and unwanted impurities.
      • Air separators АСХ - a closed air circuit and a cross-flow fan are designed for grain cleaning and blowing off light impurities. By the way, air separators are also used to separate already hulled products (to remove husks and bran, and to control husk level), but this stage is still to come.
      • The next stage in grain cleaning is Grain-cleaning separator БСХМ-16, which cleans the product more completely, separates it into fractions and prepares it for the next stage.
      • Destoner Р3-БКТ-100 is designed for cleaning grain from mineral impurities by dry method. It is an indispensable part of the equipment used in grain processing plants.
    2. CALIBRATION. The next stage is the calibration of the cleaned grain. The Plansifters РК are good for this solution. The main functions of this machine are: grading by particle size before dehulling processes, selecting intermediate products of husking and polishing, and sorting and checking the final product.
    3. DE-HULLING AND POLISHING.
      • Roll hullers СГР-400М and СГР-600М. To save the integrity of the kernel and the product’s properties and qualities, a personalised approach to the husking process is required. Therefore, an excellent solution at this stage is to use modernised roll hullers СГР. The grain is passed through these machines to separate the hard, inedible flower husk. The result is an intermediate product – hulled millet groats – which have high nutritional value due to the retention of the seed and fruit coats, and include the aleurone layer. It's rich of B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin), and essential minerals In addition, the outer layers contain beneficial minerals essential for the functioning of all human organs and systems, as well as proteins, amino acids and fats.
      • However, this grain has a very short sale period and cannot be stored for long, because the fat in the surface layer oxidises on contact with oxygen, causing the grain to spoil and turn rancid.
      • To remove fat and the remains of the seed coat and endosperm from the surface layer, the kernel is passed through polishing machines. You should use Degerminator СІМО ДС-2 for millet polishing. After this, the polished grain goes through an air control process in АСХ air separators to remove the husks.
    4. SORTING.
      • To sort the husked products, the Table separator МСХ is used or, as the experts refer it, the paddy-machine. The sorting machine separates unhusked grains, and grains of the same crop are also sorted based on their differing physical and mechanical properties.
      • We also recommend a color sorter machine as an indispensable device for effective and accurate sorting. This high-tech equipment ensures product control and guarantees high-quality output for finish market.
